Washers are primarily used for distributing the load across a threaded fastener like a nut or a bolt. A washer can also be used for insulating steel screws from aluminium surfaces. Generally washers are made of metal and plastic and can serve many other uses such as a locking device, wear pad, or to reduce vibration espeically if its a rubber washer.
